Living with PDD
A real life Nightmare...

This is story about a 10 Month old Timneh African Grey Parrot named Austin who died of a disease called Proventriculus Dialation Disease (PDD). Our Story starts with the day we noticed Austin not feeling well and taking you through each day as we got closer to discovering that Austin was suffering from a disease that every Avian lover dreads more then any other disease.

PDD is a disease in which there is no test to detect it, there is no treatment, no cure. PDD is a disease which can hide self with your parrot for both a long time, or a short time. Once you notice your baby is not well, often he is in advanced stages of this horrible disease. PDD is 100 Percent Fatal. This horrifying disease effects the nerves within the body, which in turn affects all organs by enlarging them, and making the walls thin. This causes the Digestive Track to stop working properly and basically your baby starves to death slowly because he can't absorb nutrients or even digest the food he eats. PDD also causes neurological disorders, because of the nerve involvement, you baby can have seizures which can cause your baby to not beable to stand, perch, fly, or worse even lift his own head up.

It was 4 weeks from the day our Austin seemed unwell to the day he was taken from us by this disease. And worse now, all our other 9 beautiful pet parrots are at risk of having been exposed to this disease and we could lose any of them any time PDD decides (if it does) to attack another baby of ours.

Our Diary is being written for research purposes as well as personal purposes by recording daily changes in our parrots and also by describing the real life struggles, fears and pain we feel in dealing with this horrible disease.

PLEASE, if you know of any parrot owners out there, tell them about this diary and encourage them visit so they can be informed and be aware of PDD. And lastly, if you have it in your heart, please consider giving to PDD research in helping us to find a cure.
