10 Jun 2003 - A moment with Simon
Birds all seem okay today and have had a reasonably good day. Again however, Simon is more quiet then normal. Ever since he had his blood feather pulled, he's not been the same 100 percent. I've worked hard to help Simon over come his Nerotic state, which he came with when I adopted him. He was so deathly afraid of humans and would scream and scream when someone approached him. He bit everyone who would try to touch him. He would sit in his cage in the back corner still and very weary as a young bird. I remember the day I found him in that pet store. He screamed at first, but my approach and knowledge of greys probablly came through in my body language. I knew how to approach a neurotic Grey and worked with that bird for weeks. Eventually after bleeding hands and fingers, i earned enough trust to pick him up and from there he learned I was not going to hurt him and he began to trust me and feel comfortable in my presence. I remember the first day I held in my arms and craddled him between my neck and shoulder. I rocked him like a baby as he found the courage to allow me to hold him like this. Strange to some, but I sat there rocking Simon and tears flowed with the joy and comfort that bird must have felt for the first time. From there it's history. Simon came home with me and to this day is the bird who I would say is most bonded to me. Simon refuses contact or interaction with my other birds, he only wants to be with me and prefers me rather then the company of other birds. I think Simon feels he is more human then the rest. He's smart and perhaps a true prodigy African Grey. He has more then 50 words, says dozens of sentences and can repeat a new word said to him or that he finds exciting within minutes of hearing it for the first time.

Simon surprised me the this morning . He sang!. He sang like a real human and it brought tears to my eyes. He sang " Bad boy, bad boy, whatcha gonna dooooooo". And he sang it, not just saying the words.......but sing!! How many African Greys sing???. !

So on one hand its exiciting, cute and wonderful. On the other hand it breaks my heart because in away, I don't want my babies to learn anything new. Anything new that will grasp my heart and make me love them more. Why? Because I fear losing them to PDD. The more their personalities come out, the more I love them and the more I love them, the more my nightmare seems real, the more the realities of PDD cuts like a knife.
